Used to have curly hair...?

my hair has gone through a couple stages over my life. when i was a baby, i have very fine, curly ringlet hair. then as i grew into a toddler and young child i had almost straight ,thin hair that had a bit of wave to it. then puberty hit and my hair went crazy; frizzy, puffy, messy curly nest. it was horrid. then when i got to high school, i started learning to tame the curls and frizz. had really curly frizzy hair throughout high school, got dreadlocks because my hair was so unmanagable when i was in college, then about 2 years ago i decided to shave off the dreads. it was the best thing i ever did. my hair has now grown back very long and wavy and much calmer and softer. the only problem is, i have NO idea how to deal with this wavy hair. its pretty thick ( i think i need to get it thinned again...) and if i blow dry it, its goes almost straight (with no brushing involved) and puffy and frizzy. please help me figure out what to do with my hair. from products to styling, ihave no idea!!

Get a professional to help you determine what to do with your hair. In the meantime, use a shampoo that has no alcohol--expensive, but worth it. I have curly hair that gets frizzy in the humidity especially. First, I get a really good cut. Then, I wash it and air dry it sometimes, but usually I flat iron it using "heat glide" to keep the flat iron from burning it and it acts as a guide against frizzing, plus my hair stays styled straight for almost a week. Don't wash it too often, like once every 5 to 7 days. Use a good moisturizer, especially if you air dry it. Sometimes I roll it on big curlers and sit under the dryer. The curls come out bouncy and full and the style lasts 5-7 days without having to reset it. Until you get the hang of dealing with curly hair, get a professional who is used to doing curly hair--some one from the middle east [Iran, Turkey], if possible. They are used to curly hair and do a wonderful job of taming your locks and keeping your hair looking great. Good luck!

my hair is the same way. it blow dries with a slight wave and very puffy. i just have to put some straightening stuff in it before i dry it, and flatten it with a straightening iron. then it usually stays straight and manageable.

It depends on how long you hair is, longer hair normally weighs down the hair so it's straighter but I have shoulderlength hair and it's never not frizzy with the humidity here, so I'm dependant on John Frieda's Frizz Eaze for curly hair. I wash and condition it maybe dialy maybe every other day but whenever I have washed it I use the extra strength Serum on my wet hair and it does make all the difference. And I'm not a particularly girly person, and don't faff about with my hair for ages, so it works for me!

you can certainly do as the above poster suggested and straighten your hair, but on days where it's rainy or humid... well, that might not work out so nicely.

I had hair like yours until a few months ago -- I got it cut with layers, with the shortest layer being around my nose and the longest one being slightly past my shoulder. I know it's drastic when you have very long hair, but it's much easier to manage and it really doesn't look bad. if you straighten it with a straightening iron it looks great, but you can also add a tiny bit of curl gel to have a curly look. you can put it in a messy bun too -- it can look really casual or dressy, either way. hope this helps!

I wear my hair both curly and straight. Here are some suggestions for both (and obviously what I use):

1) For curly hair, get a creme based de-frizzer. I use Biolage's curl defining creme and finish it off with Pantene's curl defining spray gel so the curls are more noticeable. Do the curl cream while your hair is still damp then after about 15-20 min, spray it with the gel. Scrunch just a bit but do not fuss or your hair will get frizzy!

2) For straight hair, I have a big round brush (1 1/2" around) that I use to help style the hair when I blow dry it. Before I blow dry it though, I put in Paul Mitchell Super Skinny hair serum (they also offer a shampoo and conditioner -- I'm in love with this product line!!). I also have an appropriate sized curling iron/straightener that I use to style my hair afterwards. I do not ever use hair spray when I do this either.

I've received many compliments with my hair both ways. Just a little bit of investment really will go a long way. Enjoy your beautiful hair!!!

christen, the stages you are talking about are all the stages we go through, the 3month peach fuzz mostly rubs out, to be replaced with a fine, prone to be wavy hair that is mostly on darker hair, and straighter fine hair on blonds, that hair lasts about two years and is replaced by a bit stronger fatter hair, that last about 4 years, the next head lasts six years. when that goes we are about twelve and get our strong terminal hair, that will stay with us for the rest of your life
