Curly hair experts please help???

I have long curly hair up to the small of my back. How do I keep it long. My hair is kinda damaged and very frizzy(thers also a lot of dandruff but I can live with that). My scalp is dry and often itches(there was thie one time I actually scratched it till it bled). I cut off the split ends alredy, but there are a few that are in the middle of the hair strand(its a very minor amount). The thing is that I wanna keep it long because everyone in my family with curly hair either has it chin length or shoulder length and I dont wanna be another carbon copy. They keep telling me to cut it short . The thing is I cut it short back in 2002 and I hated it. Any helpful advice or a hair products I can use and wehere to find them?

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but as one who has had a decent amount of experience with curly hair, I would recommend that you do cut your hair shorter for the time being. Once curly hair is damaged, (as it easily becomes,) it's nearly impossible to fix it. The majority of curly-haired people keep their hair short for this reason. In your situation, I'd say that what you should do to maintain your individuality is cut your hair shorter to get rid of all the damage for now, then be very gentle with it as it grows back out to the length that you want it to be. That way you can still have, in the long-run, the long curls that you want, and they will be in better condition. You'll also probably be surprised at how quickly your hair will grow back to the length it is now!!

As far as hair products go, I really like the Matrix Curl Life line of curly hair products, (shampoo, conditioner, AND various styling products,) but those tend to be relatively expensive, so for a cheaper solution I use Herbal Essences Totally Twisted shampoo and conditioner, followed by different brands of styling products. The Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner will make your hair smell AMAZING, too. As far as products go, (since they make the major difference here,) I usually use Pantene Soft Start Comb-In Treatment (for curly hair,) to prevent damage in general and to protect my hair, and then I use KMS Curl Up spray to keep my hair from frizzing. I've come to use these after a LOT of experimentation, however, so you'll just have to figure out over time what works best for your particular curly hair type. Good luck!

Be gentle with your hair. Wash and condition with Arbonne shampoo and conditioner, scrunch in curl cream, gel and mousse, and blow dry with a diffuser. The product you put in your hair will protect it from the heat.

Don't condition too much (Once a week) conditioner--believe it or not--dries the scalp. If you go to a salon, ask for Long Layers. This will eliminate the dead ends in the middle of your hair, but keep the length. If you are all wone length now, your head will feel a lot lighter afterwards...LOL. If you plan to cut yourself, for long layers, when cutting make sure you hold hair straight up(Front, back, sides, etc), when cutting if you hold all the hair straight up it will layer your hair but keep the length. But it may make your hair curlier.

Use a good shampoo and conditioner (this is a time you don't want to go cheap) ask your hairstylist what to use.

Wash gently, but make sure you get down to your scalp. I have found allowing my hair to dry naturally helps.

Use a curly hair mousse, scrunch, and if you are using hot styling irons or straightners, but some spray that helps keep you from getting damaged.

I have long curly hair and I don't brush it excpet when I get out of the shower and its wet to that keeps it from frizzing.I also use only Loreal Paris everything. They are a little more expensive than say pantene or herbal essences but it is so worth it.Also Lancome the really expensive company owns Loreal so you get high retail stuff at a fraction of what Lancome costs.I also have my curly hair long to my but which pulls down some of the curl so its not as frizzy or big.As for your dry scalp you might be alergic to your shampoo or styling products the best thing to do is not scratch the itch and try using a different hair product and see if that reduces the itching.
