Help With Curly Hair!!!?

My 1 year old daughter is mixed, her dad is black, I'm white. Her hair feels just like mine, and looks pretty much like mine, except it's very curly. And I have the hardest time trying to comb it out. Her curls get so matted and knotted up in the back, it's a mess. So someone said just wash her hair and dont brush it out since it's curly, well I try that and it just looks like a bird's nest and the big knotted mess in the back just gets more knotted together. So I found a baby shampoo with seperate conditioner that actually makes her hair feel silky and doesnt hurt her when I comb it. But any other suggestions what I should do. And someone people say not to wash curly hair everyday, but when I dont, it's a bigger mess. So I need help. Is it bad to wash her curly baby hair everyday or what? Any other suggestions, let me know.

I can sympathize with you - my hair matted as a child and that was before conditioners and cream rinses. I went through a lot of hair tugging as a kid, until my mother finally got so tired of trying to comb my hair she took me to a barber and had it cut off as a Buster Brown cut.

But there is a site www.naturallycurly.com and they can give you some good advise. They are located in Austin, Texas, but they can direct you to someone near you, perhaps, but they also can suggest what you should use for a baby to keep from hurting her head. Good luck!

P.S. the person that told you to wash and not brush her hair is on the right track - but I think that would work better with an older child or adult. That is what I do when I want to wear curls and if I don't I brush my hair. Then it is straighter.

well when I was little, i had really curly hair and the best way was to comb it right after so if you comb well enough, it could be straightened out a bit. Keep washing the hair everyday. I mean what harm could it do? If you dont wash it, think about if you had your hair unwashed for a couple of days.

Get a little bit of detangler and spray it on before you comb through. If it's long enough, you could also try braiding it at night to keep it straight while she's sleeping. That may prevent you from having to wash it everyday, too. And, if you're giving her a bath at night, then she's sleeping on her hair, it may be tangling while she's sleeping because it's not all the way dry when she goes to bed. That always creates a mess. When she gets older I strongly recommend curl defining mousse of some sort, and I wish you the best of luck.

Never brush curls out, Ever! Wash hair with a conditioning shampoo, rinse then follow with a heavy conditioner and comb through working your way up from bottom with a wide tooth comb. Leave on for 3 - 5 minutes, rinse. Squeeze hair gently in towel to dry and never rub. Spray hair with a leave in conditioner before styling. If hair is thick use a creme leave in conditioner like Garnier Curl %26amp; Shine Leave-In Conditioning Cream comb, then style with Garnier Fructis Style Soft Curl Cream twisting selected strands around finger to form more defined curl. With curly hair you just need to condition as much as possible. If you must use gel or hairspray make sure its alcohol free. Air drying is better for curly hair than blow drying but if you have to use one with a diffuser. Oh and when they say not to wash it everyday they mean not to shampoo it every day but use a conditioner to wash out hair. If you use gel or hairspray or anything sticky and flaky I advise to shampoo.

For quick next day touch up just spritz some water on it and untangle with comb and re-twist selected strands.
