If you have curly hair, Is it supposed to break often when you brush it out?

A few days after my hair is washed, I brush it out thoroughly. Because it's curly, there are a lot of little "knots" which form, which is normal. When I brush it out, I hear a lot of hairs breaking. How can I avoid that?

No, it shouldn't. You should use a soft brush first and then a comb. You should also get some kind of detangling spray. Kenra is a good one.

Comb your hair with a wide tooth comb while you still have conditioner in your hair, and condition it (and comb it) every day, still only shampooing 2-3x week max. Also avoid harsh products with any form of alcohol in them or that are too sticky-- creme products are best for curly hair though you need to use more for them to be affective.

You should brush you hair straight after washing it in the shower maybe, this will prevent it breaking. You shouldnt try to brush your hair through whilst its dry, because of the reason you said it will break.

maybe you could also try using a different conditioner, and treatment for after washing your hair, Cerum is what i use just a tiny little bit an it helps :D

I had the same problem when I first got my curly hair until I got a better conditioner. I'm using the Pantene Pro V for Curly hair and i LOVE it! There's a good detangler too in the collection. Along with a wide-toothed comb, my hair is fabulously curly :)

If you have curly hair, you shouldn't brush it at all unless your hair is wet or in the shower. Since your hair is curly, your hair cuticle is lifted and when brushing, it lifts the cuticle up even farther. This causes your hair to get more nappy so they away from those brushes. Hair breakage can make your curly hair look like an even bigger mess.

I have curly hair as well. I suggest brushing out your hair when it's wet...say, after a shower or something. Use good conditioner...and plenty of it. Not too much, but enough to get those knots out and make it silky smooth.

After it dries you can brush it out with your fingers.

If you are brushing your hair while it's wet, you are doing a great deal of damage. You should NEVER use any kind of brush on wet hair of any type. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and a wide-toothed comb or a large pick to get the tangles out of your hair. Start at the ends and work your way up to the scalp. Before you brush it when it is dry, use a serum such as Biosilk Silk Therapy, Framesi " by" (Be Yoursefl) Slush Gloss, or CHI Silk Infusion and make sure all the tangles are out before you use the brush. Also, you may need a trim of the ends of your hair to prevent it from splitting up the hair shaft and breaking off. Hope this is of some help.

I would have to agree with most of the answers already. I have curly hair too and I sometimes don't completely wash out the conditioner or I leave it in the entire time I am in there just so it soaks in the moisture. I don't leave a whole lot in that it would make it greasy looking or weigh it down...just some that will help brush it out. And I use a wide tooth comb as well...it definitely helps or a huge paddle brush sometimes too. Try taking the comb in the shower and when you use your conditioner...comb is through for a little while then put it up and continue with the rest of your showering agenda then rinse...the steam will help too.

No, its not "supposed" to break off but I've had the same problem. Try Aveda deep penetrating revitalizer (conditioner) and aveda cherry almond bark conditioner mixed together in your wet hair when you shower and then use hair mayonaise or shea butter products in your hair. The aveda products can be a little expensive but it really helps tame my curly mane and the shea butter (natural products) keep my hair from breaking so much.
